Andrejs Upīts Historic Museum

This is one of the rare museums in Latvia, where recent history has been preserved – the mid 20th century – reality and the paradoxes of socialist ideology.

The building was constructed in 1911 as a bank, to the design of architect E. Pole, bet with apartments located on the upper floors.

Eminent Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons spent his childhood years (1945–1949) living in apartment No.4 of the building, whereas in January 1951 writer Andrejs Upīts (1877–1970) – a powerful personality whose life embraces a whole epoch in Latvia’s history moved into this apartment. He spent the last nineteen years of his life living here.

Three memorial rooms are accessible to visitors – the dining room, living room and the study. The room arrangements, the household items, the photographs and especially the library books focus like a mirror on the writer’s contradictory personality.

Since 1 October, 2009, the museum is incorporated in the Association of Memorial Museums.
