Ogre History and Art Museum was founded in 1981. One of the museum’s principal values is its collection comprised of nearly 50,000 items. It illuminates the formation of the town and district of Ogre, their historical development, construction, day-to-day life and cultural developments.

“Stop in Ogre” showcases the diverse history of Ogre Town in a visual and informative story that starts with the arrival of first settlers on Ķente Hillfort, also known as Old Rīga, and culminates with the settlement’s heyday in the 1930s when Ogre enjoyed a huge popularity as a resort. Developments of the Soviet era are also reflected, when Ogre transformed from a swimming and air resort into an industrial hub dominated by a massive textile plant – the Ogre Knitwear Factory. The exciting and modern exhibit is enhanced with high-tech solutions – projections, sound showers, interactive mapping, video and audio materials. It delights visitors of all ages – while adults explore history, children can experience the thrill of research.

The small exhibit “From Bank to Museum” introduces the building on 36 Brīvības Street, highlighting its construction and transformation over a roughly 50-year period. Built as a State Bank of the USSR, it has undergone substantial reconstruction that transformed it into a bright and modern space, home to Ogre History and Art Museum since 2017. Art and history-themed exhibitions in the grand showroom are changed every month, highlighting new developments in the cultural space of Ogre and latest advances on the broader, national stage.
