About us

The mission of the Latvian Museum Association is to promote the development of Latvian museums by strengthening their capacity, competitiveness, agency and public profile at the national and international level.

 

The Latvian Museum Association is the largest non-governmental organisation representing museums in Latvia. It brings together state, municipal, private and autonomous museums, as well as individual members, on a voluntary basis to jointly strengthen the development of Latvian museums, represent their interests and promote a broader understanding of the importance of museums in society.

The Association serves as a professional platform for cooperation, knowledge exchange and advocacy. It addresses issues of importance to museums, promotes the development of museum professionals’ competencies, strengthens cooperation between museums and other memory institutions, and helps build a shared voice for the museum community.

The Latvian Museum Association organises large-scale initiatives and events, including the Latvian Museum Association Annual Award, the Museum Forum and the professional development programme “Museum of Tomorrow”. The Association’s committees work in the areas of museum advocacy, digitalisation, professional development and sustainability, involving specialists in addressing shared challenges.

The Latvian Museum Association is actively involved in international cooperation, representing Latvian museums in European and Baltic professional networks, as well as cooperating with other memory institutions and organisations. Since 2020, the Association has been working purposefully on the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the Latvian museum environment, strengthening understanding of the role of museums in building a sustainable, inclusive and resilient society.

The Latvian Museum Association was founded in 1992. Since its establishment, it has developed into an important organisation for museum cooperation and representation, bringing members together to achieve common goals, highlight museum achievements and foster professional growth.
