The permanent display of the Theatre Museum was designed by artists Rasma Stukmane and Jānis Pipurs, and the new museum welcomed its first visitors on 23 November 1976, the anniversary of Eduards Smiļģis’s birth. In addition to the original display from 1976 about the dawn of Latvian theatre, the museum offers a more recent display unveiled on the first floor of the building on 26 February 2019, which covers the Latvian National Theatre. The offer also includes a second-floor display from 1991 about the life and work of Eudards Smiļģis, his home office and the grand hall. The museum stores a significant collection of stage gowns, props, photos, handwritten texts, documents and memorabilia, including a wide range of materials about existing and former Latvian theatres and theatre workers, covering the period from the early theatrical activities in Latvia into the present day.
