The aim of Turaida Museum Reserve is to preserve for future generations the cultural monument complex of the historical centre of Turaida, one of the oldest proto-states in Latvian history.
The museum reserve contains a number of major archaeological, historical and cultural monuments – the mediaeval stone castle of Turaida, the wooden church of Turaida and memorial to the Rose of Turaida. It promotes the heritage of the one-time residents of the Gauja River basin, a people called the Liivs, as well as maintains and displays the historical buildings located in the economic centre of Turaida Manor.
The latest display, “Towards Latvian Statehood. Corvée. Master. Citizen”, illuminates the historic progression towards Latvian statehood, spanning the century before the foundation of Latvian State. It is a story of how, with relentless work, the Latvian people become masters of their own land, developed a national culture and, ultimately, their own state.
