The exhibition is designed as a journey in time and space, reminding that for over a century the railway has connected us to Europe and the rest of the world. The story of the narrow gauge railway is the story of the people who used it in the past, are using it now and will be using it in the future. The exhibition is more than just a glance back in time. It promotes the railway culture as an essential component of a traditional yet modern and sustainable lifestyle.
The visual code of the exhibition is the old luggage shed. (The exhibition is located in the historical luggage shed of Alūksten railway station). Its design interprets baggage boxes as stores of information. The boxes still bear witness to their former storage function, but today their historical testimony can be symbolically “unpacked” and rediscovered by a modern viewership. Local landscapes flash by in 10 stylised windows, giving one an impression of riding in a railway carriage. Here, visitors can explore a variety of fascinating artefacts, such as a glass case that displays four tracks of different width, and everyone is welcome to use digital tools to see and feel the world from the vantage point of a train driver. Exhibition stories are rooted in personal memories of the site and select technical details specific to trains and rail traffic.
During the winter months, the multimedia exposition "Alūksnes Bānīša stacija" opens for visitors the Winter exposition, where new 10 unique stories about Banitis as a friend, helper, workplace and source of inspiration can be experienced surrounded by the winter landscape of the Gulbene - Alūksnes narrow-gauge railway.
