The Latvian Museum of Photography is the only memory institution in Latvia dedicated to the medium of photography. The museum was founded in 1990, and on 18 May 1993 the permanent exhibition "The History of Latvian Photography. 1839-1941" was opened to the public, presenting the stages of the development of Latvian photography in chronological order.
In 2023, the Latvian Museum of Photography moved to the new premises of the Art Academy of Latvia at Kronvalda Boulevard 4. The museum space is being developed as an environment for education, research and discussion about photography in Latvia. The public space will provide access to the museum's library and objects for research, small exhibitions showcasing the museum's collection, and a variety of public events. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to explore the Museum's collection and to get acquainted with the relevant literature in different languages in the same space. The collection is open to researchers and interested parties by appointment.
