The origins of the museum’s collection date back to the documentary heritage collecting initiated by the Riga Latvian Society and to 1925, when teacher Jānis Greste began the systematic collection of materials related to literature and music. Over time, the museums collection has developed into a nationally significant heritage of Latvian literature, theatre, and music history. The core fields are complemented by culturally and historically significant objects from art and other fields related to these primary areas.

In 2023, at the Mežaparks Grand Bandstand, the museum opened the first and largest permanent exhibition dedicated to the Latvian Song and Dance Festival tradition, The Song Festival Space, created in honour of the 150th anniversary of the First General Latvian Song Festival.

In 2025, the Latvian National Museum of Literature and Music opened its doors to visitors at the new exhibition Procrastination and Creation, located at 6 Mārstaļu Street, Riga. It presents an inspiring and personally engaging narrative about the unique creative journeys of Latvian writers and musicians, exploring inspiration, doubt, resilience, and recognition.
