Exhibition display “Liepāja under Occupation Regimes” was created under the auspices of Liepāja Museum in 2001. Its mission is to keep alive the nation’s collective historical memory with a view to strengthening national self-esteem, which is the ideological and emotional foundation of statehood, and explaining historical issues associated with loss of statehood and occupation periods.
The museum’s exhibition display “Liepāja under Occupation Regimes” is located in former headquarters of the Liepāja section of the Popular Front of Latvia, in building used by the front during the Awakening. Now the premises have been given to a branch of the Liepāja Museum.
The display reflects the impact of the 1939 Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact and the mutual assistance agreement between the USSR and Latvia on the social, economic and cultural life of Liepāja District. As such, it tells the story of the repatriation of Baltic Germans, the events of 1940/1941 associated with the beginning of the Soviet occupation regime, Liepāja during World War II, the re-occupation by the Soviets, the deportations of 1941 and 1949, the Gulag and the Third Awakening of 1991. The museum frequently hosts thematic exhibitions from its collection and various art exhibitions, as well as lectures and meetings with historians and witnesses of the recent history of Latvia.
