The ethnographic open-air display of Naujene Local History Museum, the “Slutišķi Old Believers Farm”, is located in the village of Slutišķi, on the territory of the nature park “Daugavas Loki” (Meanders of the River Daugava). It hides from curious eyes of strangers in a quiet corner of the Daugava river valley, where bird voices lure visitors into the magical world of nature sounds. Here stands a complex of wooden buildings from the turn of the 20th century, decorated with ornate windows designed by brilliant artisans.
“Slutišķi Old Believers Farm” represents a model of spiritual and domestic culture espoused by Latgale’s Old Believers. “The Old Believers’ Residential Home” retains the traditional structural design typical for Old Believer dwellings: a narrow anteroom, “the red corner” with a prayer gown, several icons, an Old Believer prayer-rope known as “lestovka”, ornate towels, the Russian stove, “the black corner”, otherwise known as “the women’s corner”, and “the cold room”. The display about horse-drawn tools used in Daugavpils District features 20th-century farming gear typical for Latgalian peasants: work cart, sleigh, line-cart and other household items.
