Balvi District Museum was established in 1989. It is located in a reconstructed manor barn. The stock is composed of 25 thousand items that describe local history, population and culture from ancient times into the present day.
Visitors have access to two interactive displays, “The Intangible Cultural Heritage of Northern Latgale” and “Northern Latgale and Latvia’s Independence”; the exhibition “Memorial Room of General Valdis Matīss (1944-2010)” that introduces Brigadier General Valdis Matīss and “Balvi in Historic Photographs”. The museum receives thematic exhibitions and events. With advance booking, a wide range of educational programmes is available for both children and adults.
