Bauska Castle is a fine architectural example of military structures built in Latvia between the 15th and 17th centuries. Its oldest part, erected in the mid-15th century, is the only fortress of the Livonian Order built expressly for artillery cannons; meanwhile, the newest part, a fortified residence-type palace with bastions, defence walls and earthen ramparts, was constructed in the late 17th century.
The structure is the only partially preserved residence of the ducal line of Kettler from the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia, as well as Latvia’s only architectural monument that illustrates the architectural tendencies of Mannerism-style castles and trends in applied decorative arts in the Duchy of Courland.
