Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum, founded on the shore of Lake Jugla in 1924, spans 87 hectares and offers 118 samples of folk architecture. Cumulatively, they tell a story of peasant life in the rural territories of present-day Latvia from the late 17th to mid-20th century. Visitors to the museum can enjoy its natural setting as they explore the cultural heritage of Latvians and other peoples that used to live here, learning about traditions related to work in the fields, household chores and domestic organisation, festive traditions and aesthetics. The collection covers all historical regions of Latvia (Courland, Semigallia, Vidzeme and Latgale) and gives a full experience of rural environment without actually leaving the city. The open-air museum is an opportunity to spend some pleasant and valuable time in the company of children, family and friends, observe and try out old crafts, enjoy traditional food, celebrate seasonal festivals, attend a fair, or just relax and be in nature.
