The history of Vēveri village in Vecpiebalga dates back at least 400 years into the past. Its first mention in written sources comes from a 1601 document by a Swedish government inspector; the village was officially mapped in the late 17th century. When the novel “The Times of the Land-Surveyors” was published and locals bought plots of land from the manor into their family property, Vēveri already had eight homesteads. That was the time when the farm arrangement and layout of buildings that we see today originally developed. A total of around forty different types of buildings were identified in the 1928 agricultural census on eight holdings. This unique pattern of construction was discovered on a field expedition during the 1970s, and in order to preserve this complex of folk architecture in its typical landscape, the rural facility of the Latvian Ethnographic Open-Air Museum was created in the 1980s.
