A school operated in this building from 1843 until 1964. On the initiative of writer Herberts Dorbe, the museum was opened here on 13 May 1972.

The museum introduces visitors to the school's first teacher, Ernests Dinsbergs (1816–1902) – one of the earliest Latvian cultural figures: a writer, poet, publicist and translator. He worked at Kubalu School for fifty years and lived here until 1899.

We offer the opportunity to step into the past and experience a rural classroom, as well as the daily life of teachers and students within the school complex and ethnographic homestead. Visitors will learn about the beginnings of education in the Kurzeme region, the efforts of rural schoolteachers to educate peasant children, and the development of cultural life and Latvian national identity before the Young Latvian movement.

Visitors can explore:
– the school building from 1842, featuring the fireplace room, a 19th-century classroom, and the teacher’s parlour, which once welcomed many prominent figures of Latvian intellectual life, theologians, educators, writers, and former pupils
– the memorial apartment of Ernests Dinsbergs in the attic (planned and built in 1878), furnished with his handmade furniture, books and unique manuscripts
– the restored outbuildings, including a granary and cart shed, recreated based on Dinsbergs’s own descriptions, as well as the ethnographic homestead with a garden and enclosures

The museum grounds include a campfire site and walking trails for relaxation in nature. During the summer season, a party room is also available for private events (by prior arrangement).
