As one of the largest and oldest museums in Vidzeme region, Madona Museum holds more than 134 000 items in its collection. Museum specialists collect and study materials related to the history, culture, art, literature and nature of the area, purchase cultural values, keep collection records and ensure its preservation and public availability. The museum’s diverse collection is used to assemble thematic exhibitions, art exhibitions and travelling exhibitions. In addition, it is reflected in the permanent exhibition display “The Region’s Archaeology” and two virtual displays – “The Ancient History of Madona District” and “The History of Madona District, 1918-1940: Land and People, Power, Culture and Religion”.
Visitors of different ages can participate in educational programmes and explore the collection. We are especially proud of some of the most demanded items in our care – the diverse assortment of textiles and the assemblage of documents and archaeological artefacts. The museum is among the sites that hold artefacts from the UNESCO “Memory of the World” nomination “Siberian Letters on Birchbark” inscribed on the National Register of Latvia. Some of the largest showrooms in Latvia’s rural areas allow the museum to provide quality exhibition spaces for a vast and diverse range of artwork that enables the public to follow current artistic processes in Latvia and beyond.
