Visitors to the museum can explore the collection of quaint, charming and utterly fascinating wooden sculptures by woodcarver Valters Hirte. The figurines are diverse and blessed with both virtue and vice, much like actual people. Industrious and lazy, cunning and naïve, arch and grumpy, wicked and benign, the little devils seem to be plucked from fairy tales and popular stories or derived from native place names. In addition, master woodcarver has interpreted the likenesses of popular artists and other creators (Imants Ziedonis, Jānis Streičs, Jāzeps Pīgoznis and others) who have visited him at different points of his life. Many visitors with roots in Mazsalaca District come to the museum to look for their ancestors in the family trees displayed in the form of posters.
Descendants from historical family lines have donated to the museum some fascinating collections. Ēriks Stamps gave the museum his collection of bells comprised of more than 500 items. Ilga Andersone sent her collection of 1300 toy mice from the distant Canada. Arnis Šteinbergs donated his collection of hunting trophies and riveting hunting stories. Local entrepreneur Andris Lauznis gave five antebellum bicycles produced by the G. Erenpreis factory and a variety of cycling accessories, whereas Tom Erenpreis added to the display with two antebellum bikes. Local enthusiasts also contributed to a display about the deportations of 1949 and the lives of the deportees in Siberia.
In addition, visitors can examine some folk dress samples typical for Mazsalaca and Northern Vidzeme.
