The museum is dedicated to the activities of the Environmental Protection Club and other green movements of the 1980s-1990s. Environmental protection affected political processes in Latvia and kick-started public awareness of environmental problems.

The museum tells the story of how the struggle to protect natural values began in Soviet Latvia in the 1960s with the Staburags campaign and of how it continued in the 1970s and 1980s with the Tree Protection Group of Imants Ziedonis, the Daugava Hydroelectric Power Plant campaign and the Environmental Protection Club (EPC), which started in the mid-1980s. The EPC was an official environmental organisation with targeted activities. Besides environmental issues, the movement triggered hot political processes. It stirred and led large masses of people into the streets. EPC was the first to bring up a number of critical issues, such as protection of the Baltic Sea, deforestation and preservation of natural diversity. EPC also became a key advocate for green lifestyle.

The museum is unique on European stage as a memory institution that shows how nature protection movement in Latvia developed and trickled into some critical processes that played a major role in the country’s overall development. The museum also offers up-to-date educational materials about environmental protection and advocacy of green lifestyle. The museum hosts exhibitions, cultural events, seminars and masterclasses.
