Tukums History Museum is located in the castle ruins of the Livonian Order, in a stonewalled building known as the Castle Tower, constructed in the mid-18th century. In its day, it has functioned as a prison and a warehouse. Since 1995, it is home to a museum that illuminates the history of the town, telling the story of Tukums and its inhabitants.

Permanent display “Our Stories, No One Else’s” presents the fates of locals against the backdrop of the political upheavals of the 20th century. Meanwhile, the virtual display features some of the Siberian letters on birchbark from the eponymous UNESCO “Memory of the World” nomination inscribed on the National Register of Latvia. The exhibitions and educational programmes link the town’s history to contemporary processes. Depending on the topic, they are created by involving groups from the local community, such as fire fighters, race car drivers, medical personnel, pupils, etc. These interactive and collaborative exhibitions are traditionally unveiled during the town festival in July.
